Movie Poster

For this project we will take a movie made in 1945 or earlier and update it for a contemporary audience, in poster form.  Change the name, change the actors, alter the plot, etc., - come up with an idea for an update/remake and create a poster for this new film.  Take photos from the web (saving your links, of course), scan them from magazines, wherever - but NOT from a preexisting movie poster design.  For this project we will work with a combination of photoshop and illustrator.  There are no constraints on the look of the poster, however you should consider the exercises we have completed in the class and apply the design problems we have solved to the problem of communicating movie content through design.

Prep for Movie Poster Design:

Find 3 posters on the web and post them to your blog (include links to the original site), 1 modern (made before 1960), 1 postmodern (made after 1960), 1 post millennial.
Describe the poster in terms of the goals of the designer.  What does the design say about the film and how does it say this?  How is the design trying to get you to attend a screening, what tools is she using?  What are the difference in strategies that might relate to differences in the times they were produced?

Shape, Color, and Composition Exercise

Create 5 designs using only 3 - 4 shapes each, only 3-4 objects on the page.  Think of each design as a QUICK digital thumbnail SKETCH for a movie poster/advertisement.  Each design should represent a different film genre (see link)

Between your 5 designs you should use at least 1 of the shape types listed in your text:
Basic Geometric
Complex Geometric
Structured Freeform
Random Freeform
Literal Freeform
(Design Basics Index pp.130-131)

You should use the following methods for creating color combinations:
Monochromatic
Triad
Analogous
Complementary
Split Complementary
(Design Basics Index pp.214-217)

Consider how the size and placement of objects both in relation to the page and in relation to each other effects the design.   Each design should use one of the composition principles from the Principles of Graphic Design website (section 3C) to complement the film genre represented:
Emphasis
Balance
Rhythm
Unity

Each design should be 4.25 x 5.5 and posted on your blog along with the film genre, method of color combination, and composition principle used.
